How often can I straighten?
Hello fellow curlies!! I have 3a to 3b hair that reaches about midway down my back. I straightened it today and I do really like it straight but I was wondering how often I could get away with it. Now, I have done it like 3 or 4 times since august. Soo I don't often but if I could get away with it more I would. How often do you think I can straighten it without it getting super ugly and dry and stuff?

I straighten my hair twice a month and my hair is still healthy and I love it. I have noticed that its actually growing faster now that I wear it straight. My hair stylist using a heat protectant before she blows it dry and then a different lighter one before she flat irons it. They both add shine and smell amazing. It all depends on your hair and the products they use on your hair.

My hair dresser doesn't use hair protector I guess that's why its damaged but they told me it causes build up and that's why it looks stiff

You should always use heat protectant. Try one that's a light most that may work best for your hair type. The kind I use is a light mist and not to heavy and it adds shine and protects. Plus it smells amazing. And remember a little goes a long way.

I really want to know this too. My husband wants me to straighten my hair every once in a while and i want to...but i am so scared to damage it! I worked hard to nurse it back to health and would love to know how often i can do it before i commit a curly girl sin! Lol

you can straighten safely every week but you have to have a low heat technique to prevent curl damage.

It depends on your hair type, if you have weaker already damaged hair or thinner hair then regular flat ironing can cause even more damage. If you have healthy hair, use a protectant and take good care of your hair and it can handle more flat ironing then go for it.
I noticed the biggest Improvement in my hair when I stopped flat ironing it every week. My hair grew so much and it felt so much better. It also looks a lot better when I do flat iron.
I flat iron about 2-3 times a year and that is in the winter months. We get hot humid weather all summer and it is a waste of my time to flat iron then since it doesn't stay straight in humidity or when I sweat. It's also easier for me to keep it curly because I go to the gym a lot.
I know it's hard to pick up the flat iron when you have worked so hard taking care of your hair but it doesn't have to be all bad if you use the lowest heat setting possible to achieve straight hair for you and you use a heat protectant and add the moisture back in when you wash and condition it should be okay once in a while.

Yes, it does depend on your hair type and how well you take care of your hair in general. I have super thick 3C-4A curls that won't straighten unless the iron is at high heat (400°). So, I will go a whole year without flatironing.
However, when I do, I wash the day before with a sulfate-free shampoo, and then use a deep-protein conditioner. I let it air-dry until the next day. I apply huge gobs of a thick silicone heat protectant before flatironing.
The next time I wash, I use a sulfate shampoo, use another deep-protein conditioner, then apply my curl stylers as usual. My curls come bouncing back!
That's it until next year...
