sign spinners
I have noticed lately that there are a bunch of people spinning signs along the side of streets advertising everything from Subway to We Buy Old Jewelry to Tax Preparers. Sometimes the spinners are dressed in full costume for their product or business; others just look business casual with a big sign.
Is this really effective advertising or marketing? Have you ever decided to do something because you saw someone spinning a sign for it?

My hometown has most of its shopping plazas and stores off of one large road. Some of the plazas don't have big signs telling you what stores are in them, so they hire sign spinners to attract attention from that big road. There have definitely been times where I saw a sign spinner and thought to myself, "Oh, I didn't know there was a ___ in there." So at least in my hometown, it's a good way for businesses to let people know that they exist off this main road. But I'd have to imagine that's sort of a unique situation (the lack of visibility/stationary signage).

I haven't seen many sign spinners around here in a few years. They were sort of a fad for a while there. I actually look negatively on the tax preparers that have the people dressed as uncle sam or the statue of liberty out on the street corner. I was somebody a bit more professional doing my taxes.
Where this does seem to work is in this one area where there are a lot of warehouses and strip malls. The warehouses that sell furniture and such direct to the public have sign spinners to tell drivers that they're tucked back there. It works for me.

I will purposely avoid that store because that type of advertising drives me nuts. It's so distracting to see that in my peripheral!!!

This is kind of my impression of it - a bit on the negative side. That's why I was wondering if it was effective.

I have purchased more than a couple Caeser's pizzas because of their sign carriers.
I have an acquaintance who is a sign spinner for Liberty Tax Services. She wears a full on Statue of Liberty costume. I think it would be awful but she loves her job.
I always honk and wave at people doing these jobs.

I honk and wave too! I would hate for them to feel ignored. It must be a lonely job. Unless you like seeing the public without having to actually deal with them.

We have lots of them here and I've always wondered how they feel at the end of their shift after breathing in all the exhaust at the busy intersections. I saw a guy yesterday wearing a mask while working, which is better than nothing.

I'd never heard the term "sign spinner" before!
We do have sone local business that hire folks with mental challenges to hold up signs. I think that's cool and try to support those businesses.

We get dancing sign holders. It's such an awful sounding job, but they look like they're having a blast. There was this one guy that was so good you'd wish for a red light just so you could watch him a bit.
If they were advertising something I wanted, I would go there. Happy employees makes me feel better about a business.

In the last year there's been a resurgence of them in my area, and I've noticed a few sign waving machines. I tried to google a pic and apparently mannequins are often paired with the machines--that I have not seen. It makes me feel bad for the people who would have otherwise done the job.
But OTOH the costumed gigs are less expendable, and if I was going to do that job, I would want to be in costume.

I didn't know the people wearing sandwich boards were called sign spinners.

"True" sign spinners hold a sign in front of them that is attached to a piece of wood or metal that rotates. Others hold a sign and spin it around by hand. And others wear the sandwich boards.
I sound like I know what I'm talking about even tho we only have 2 in our whole town. : )

This type of promotional effort is lost on me...unless it's for a carwash on a hot day or fast food or some other fast, cheap purchase I don't really need.
