I hate single strand knots, every now and then I will find a few and cut them off. I didn't even know what a single strand knot was before I began wearing my hair curly nor had I ever had one.
There is an article on here about it. It says:
Fairy knots are teeny tiny knots that form on the ends of strands of hair, especially highly textured hair. They can appear after frequent manipulation from styling and even sometimes from constantly doing wash-and-go’s. Resist the urge to pull or break them off as this will only cause more breakage. Instead, grab a pair of scissors and snip the knot. If left unchecked, these fairy knots could cause more tangles and then become a nightmare to deal with. In the long run, your curls will thank you for trimming them off.
I know if you leave them in it can make the strand weak so try to cut them off when I find them. Sometimes mine are not even at the end they are further up the shaft. I don't get many but they are a hassle sometimes.

My hair is outrageously fragile, so I cut them off immediately, because they will break which leads to splitting and all sorts of unsexiness.
Some people with thicker stronger hair might not mind them and leave them on, but I can't.

Same for me also. My strands are coarse but fragile and if I leave the ssk's for too long they will lead to breakage.

I totally agree with Ericachristina and Jessiebanana, these "fairy knots" (should be called "demon knots!" ) need to be snipped off asap. When I was younger I had no idea what they were and I left them on. Well, after a few months most of my hair had them and it had turned into tangle city! I had to cut a lot of hair off at that point. Now, I do a "search and destroy" on these knots at least once a month. There's no way to ever "untie" them, so unfortunately cutting them off is the only method.

Do you seal your hair? Keeping your ends moist & sealed can help cut down on the ssk's

I really wanted to commit to sealing more often but I just can't get into the habit of it. My hair doesn't look great if I style with oil in it, it makes it a bit weighed down so I have to use a very small amount and I never feel like I'm getting all the ends because some hair is different lengths.

^^^I seal using 4 drops of GSO in each quarter size dollop of my leave in...my hair cannot handle sealing in a separate step. Hope this helps

I'd be willing to seal just my ends if it would help with SSK. Is GSA a lighter oil?

I hate the look and feel of damaged hair, so I've grown pretty comfortable cutting it. I want length, but not at the expense of having hard to manage, rough hair. It's trial and error. One day I'll have figured my hair out for the most part and I'll be able to let it grow out more, until then I'll be patient. I'll just have to be comfortable with feeling beautiful and awesome with my hair as is...could be a good thing.

Sorry, I wasn't trying to be scary! I'm sure your hair is in much better shape than mine was; I had no idea how to do anything right for my hair back then, so the ssks were probably only one of a number of issues. You won't have to cut off your growth. Just try snipping off any ssks that you come across! Unless you start developing major tangles, this should be sufficient.

GSO, (Grapeseed oil), is one of the lightest oils; right in line with sunflower and safflower oil. Others would even list sweet almond and apricot just a bit heavier.
