The Queen of Curls answers your every curl question

Dear Ouidad: How does one maintain her look for the next day without having to wash her hair again? Is it better to wash the hair every day?

A: When you sleep, put the hair in loose ponytail on the top of the head to preserve curls as best as possible for the morning. In the morning, use Botanical Boost to refresh your curls. After your hair is dry, you can use a drop of Shine Glaze and your hair will look beautiful for the day. In terms of washing your hair, generally it isn’t necessary to shampoo daily. Your curl pattern should dictate how often you should shampoo.

  • Loose waves – 2-3 times per week

  • Curly/Tight – 1-2 times per week

  • Kinky – 1 time per week

I use to wash my hair everyday when I i frst started styling my curls…I didn’t know of any other way to revive them. After a CG intervention from a friend I learned different techniques and products that worked wonders for my curls. I wash and deep condition my hair at least once a week now(with knowledge taking care of my curls have gotten so much better)… great question from that CG!!!

my curls are rather short so I can’t put them in a pony tail’ instead I sleep with my curls loose on a satin covered pillow. highly recommended!!

Until recently, I have shampooed my 3b hair 3x’s a week and had to wet my hair everyday for my curls to look decent. Now, I put my hair up in a loose ponytail and I can get a good three days wear now! I am thrilled that this simple method has changed my routine dramatically and with exceptional results!

I used all 3 of your recommended products, and I even bought brand new grade A shampoo but it still doesnt seem to work on my hair. I did it the same way that you did in the commercial but I dont think that its made for people with my amount of curly hair =( I dont know if im doing something wrong or it just doenst work…

I used to shampoo once a week but trying to go curly has meant I can only go two days before my frizz becomes godzilla. I use the loose ponytail but have to almost soak my hair every morning just to get the curls to re-form.

If your hair is long enough to tie back, tie it back, but not tightly as with a small rubber band… loosely as you might with a ribbon. I have really long layered (with bangs even!) 3B wild hair. I wash it once or twice a week, use tons of conditioner when I do, only use some Moroccan Oil immediately after getting out of the shower after patting my hair dry, let it air dry, tie it back (not on top of my head)loosely and wrap a silk ot soft cotton scarf around my head-like bandanna style before going to sleep pretty snugly, which prevents me from rolling around on my actual hair and moving it around against the pillow and separating the curls-thus making it fluffy and frizzy.
I have had short hair as well-like old Rihanna short-and during that time I just tied a scarf around the same way, the ponytail isn’t necessary. :)

Scrunchie marks left from ponytails are due to either wrapping it around your hair too tight or securing it when the hair isn’t dry enough, and can be really frustrating.
