I have a wheat/gluten allergy; can you help me find products for my Type 3/4 Hair?
Dear Curly Suzy: I am an African-American female with Type 3/4 (3 in the front and 4) in the back. I have developed a wheat/gluten allergy recently (found this out when I broke out in hives from Miss Jessie’s Stretching Silkening Creme. Can you suggest shampoos, conditioners and finishing cremes to take away the frizz? I wish I could still use Miss Jessie’s (been buying for 6 years) but my allergy will no longer allow it.

Dear Natalie: I am sorry that you have to switch from a product that you have been using for so long. I hope I can help with some new ideas for wheat- and gluten-free hair products.

Thank you so much for the list of wheat-free products. I have celiac disease and have been dealing with small bumps on my neck and shoulders that cleared up once I stopped using products with wheat proteins in them.
However, my hair LOVES protein and I need to find a protein treatment that has no wheat proteins in it. Can you suggest anything?

I use Max Green Alchemy Scalp Rescue Shampoo, which is gluten free. It is more difficult to find gluten free conditioners that work.
I use the Alba leave-in conditioner after shampoo conditioning and that works well. I also like Honey Girl Organics Hair Oil. I hope more and more companies will go gluten free!

Piggyhound,
I don’t know if you’ll get this response since I see you commented a while back. Thought I’d answer just in case you or someone else is still interested. I’ve been dealing with the same issue for about 6 years now. I just recently found a protein shampoo and conditioner that I love. It’s a little pricey but I’ve been using it for about 4-5 months now and just love it. It’s called “Trinity” and is made by a company called “Surface.” They tout the entire line as being gluten free, sulphate free, paraben free, and vegan. I’ve tried a few of their other products. Personally liked the moisturizing conditioner but not the moisturizing shampoo. Didn’t care much for their hairsprays. Anyway, just thought I’d pass that on. I know re-vamping your hair routine to suit allergies is no fun. Good luck!
